SIXTEEN

THE NEXT MORNING, ABE SLEPT IN later than any other morning so far. Now that Naki was safe, and they had a good guess where Headmaster Bello was hidden, the urgency wasn’t as strong. Abe was about to follow Imara to the crypt room, but had to go back for his water bottle. On one of the stone couches, Naki was rolling up her sleeping bag. Abe took advantage of the moment and dug through his backpack, pretending to be busy. This was just the chance he was waiting for. Darius sat fussing with his hair and beard, but once he left, Abe could talk to Naki alone.

Naki said to Darius, “Where did you get that?”

“I’ve had it the whole time,” Darius said. “It was in my pocket when the Judge took us hostage.”

“Don’t let Imara see it,” Naki said in a solemn tone.

“She already knows I have it. Obviously I don’t use it when she’s in the room. I’m not stupid. I don’t need her yelling at me.”

Abe turned to sneak a glance. Darius had a small, round object in his hand, but Abe couldn’t see it. Curiosity got the best of him, and he asked, “What is it?”

Darius turned and held up the object. “It’s just a mirror,” he said.

Abe lowered his eyebrows in thought, but Naki jumped up and left the room so fast, it was almost a jog. Abe zipped his backpack and tried to mask his disappointment. He would have to catch Naki alone another time. It would be tricky, but he was convinced this was the best way. Abe heard Imara yelp, and his back shot up straight. But by the time he got to his feet, he heard Siluk yell and Imara started gagging.
